Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
