Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" policies pose an existential threat to European civilization. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The actual danger facing Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a paltry 13.5% growth for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the global top fifty tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem

This widening economic gap stems from stronger efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly American. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity raises a vital issue: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

Several major factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. The EU still lacks a genuine capital markets union, a factor that limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper Europe. A US startup can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses considerable advantages: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
